OLIVINE APPLICATIONS

  • Olivine is a mineral that is not often used in industry. Most olivine is used in metallurgical processes as a slag conditioner. High-magnesium olivine (forsterite) is added to blast furnaces to remove impurities from steel and to form a slag. Olivine has also been used as a refractory material.
  • The aluminium foundry industry uses olivine sand to cast objects in aluminium. Olivine sand requires less water than silica sands while still holding the mold together during handling and pouring of the metal. Less water means less gas (steam) to vent from the mold as metal is poured into the mold.
  • In Finland, olivine is marketed as an ideal rock for sauna stoves because of its comparatively high density and resistance to weathering under repeated heating and cooling.
  • Olivine is used as a slag conditioner and a refractory in the steel industry. In the refractory industry it can be useful as block olivine for furnace linings, ladle linings, patching compounds, crushed olivine mixed with a binder for refractory brick manufacture, etc.
  • Olivine can be the most cost-effective raw material for the production of magnesium metal.
